Message from the Board President

Dear GlobalSkin Members,

I am inspired and energized after attending the World Health Assembly (WHA) side event "Skin Diseases as a Global Public Health Priority - NO UHC without Skin Health," hosted by GlobalSkin and the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) last month in Geneva. The event aimed to build awareness about the burden, impact, and cost of skin diseases on both individuals and public health systems, with the goal of advocating for greater prioritization of skin diseases on the global policy agenda.

GlobalSkin African Members' Regional Meeting

GlobalSkin proudly hosted its first African Members’ Regional meeting, April 18-20, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together 36 Members from 12 countries. The meeting aimed to strengthen the network of dermatology patient organizations across Africa by enhancing patient support, boosting advocacy efforts, and building organizational capacity. Representatives from the African Union, World Health Organization, GLODERM, dermatology associations, and the African Medicines Agency Treaty Alliance attended, sharing valuable insights on advocacy opportunities for skin patient organizations.

A key outcome of the African Members' Regional Meeting was the unanimous decision to establish GlobalSkin’s first Regional Network, led by a newly elected Working Group with representatives from South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. The African Regional Network immediately began setting priorities for their workplan, focusing on defining pan-African patient needs, promoting African-centric skin disease awareness, and collaborating on data curation. An online meeting to discuss and approve the workplan will be held later this year.

The African Regional Network pilot initiative aims to pave the way for similar opportunities in other regions, to be discussed at the GlobalSkin Conference in 2025. Read the full article recapping the African Regional Meeting and check out our Flickr album.

Young Patient Leaders Coffee Chat Recap

On June 5, young patient leaders from GlobalSkin member organizations came together to discuss their common challenges and needs as youth leaders. Varying levels of youth engagement and involvement are in place across the organizations, but it was clear that young people are eager to take on roles of leadership within their organizations and across the dermatology patient advocacy space.

GlobalSkin is excited to continue working with young patient leaders to better determine what supports and resources can be provided to support them in their advocacy journeys. This is essential in ensuring youth perspectives are properly considered in our work and that succession planning for our advocacy efforts is in place.

Please stay tuned for more news regarding GlobalSkin’s upcoming initiatives for Youth Engagement.

Uniting to Change Perceptions
World Skin Health Coalition Campaign

As a member of the World Skin Health Coalition, GlobalSkin actively participated in the #NotJustMySkin campaign in March and April 2024 to raise global awareness about the significant impact of skin diseases and conditions. Many of you signed the open letter urging health policy leaders worldwide to prioritize these critical issues.

We are delighted and proud to report that this campaign was a resounding success!

In just six weeks, we made some very significant achievements together:

  • The campaign reached over five million people
  • Campaign materials featuring data and stories of real people living with skin conditions and diseases were viewed over 17.8 million times
  • Over 6,800 people in 130 countries across all six World Health Organization regions signed the open letter urging health policy leaders to act.

YOU helped to make this possible! Thank you!

You can see all of our achievements in an Impact Report. Visit the Coalition website to download the Impact Report now and share it with people in your community and with health policy leaders in your country. We will be doing the same in Geneva.

GRIDD Update

The GRIDD project continues to be high on GlobalSkin’s priority list. The research team at the University of Hamburg remains focused on analyzing the data from the 2023 GRIDD Study and their early reactions are very positive about the quality of the data collected. Publishing in dermatology journals on the results from the study and on the validation of the PRIDD measure are planned for this year.

In fact, this year we have had several articles published on the project including the latest in the British Journal of Dermatology (BJD) on Further refinement of the Patient-Reported Impact of Dermatological Diseases (PRIDD) measure using classical test theory and item response theory. We are thrilled with this publication because it was chosen as journal article of the month which has several extra features that might interest members including a plain language summary and video explanation by the author. It is another step closer to helping inform the broader research community and making it accessible to those outside the community to fully understand the importance and quality of the work being done. We have also just recently heard of another publication being accepted by the BJD on this project. We’ll be sure to share that as soon as it is live!

In preparation for publicly launching the new PRIDD measure, we are developing an online and mobile app and will unveil it at the EADV Congress in Amsterdam on September 25. This is truly a momentous time for the project and for GlobalSkin and has been seven years in the making. We sincerely thank our Members without whom the measure could not have been developed and to our funding partners who believed in the need for this patient impact measure and our ability to deliver it – we are so grateful for your commitment and support.

World Skin Health Day

World Skin Health Day is a global initiative by the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) and the International Society of Dermatology (ISD) that occurs on July 8 with the purpose of educating people about the significance of skin health and encouraging discussion and actions that work towards improving skin health. This year’s theme, ‘Skin Health for All’, highlights the overarching campaign goal and emphasizes the importance of awareness, education and equal access to dermatological care.
