World Atopic Eczema Day – September 14, 2023

Atopic eczema is a skin disease that sits at the center of other health issues; it impacts mental health and leads to the development of other diseases. The disease is incredibly difficult for patients and their families, seriously impacting daily life. Whether you live with atopic eczema, care for someone with the condition, or are already actively involved with a patient association, your voice is important!

September 14 is World Atopic Eczema Day. This awareness day was launched in 2018 to bring attention to the disease globally and across Europe through partnership and coordination by GlobalSkin and the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA).

World Atopic Eczema Day 2023: Campaign Theme

The Atopic Eczema Community comes together on September 14th to raise awareness for the disease, to speak up about the burden it has on patients and caregivers, and to recognize the need for care and treatment that is reflective of the multidimensional nature of the disease.

On World Atopic Eczema Day 2023, we will focus on the psychosocial burden on children and youth living with Atopic Eczema. This year’s campaign will share the thoughts of children and youth living with atopic eczema through the hashtag #IfYouOnlyKnew.

The idea behind this year’s campaign relies on the empathy that could be arisen showing evidence of actual effects of this chronic condition and the psychological effects it can cause on children and adolescents. This is an important change in the way the burdens of AE are addressed, bringing to the centre patients’ feelings and appealing to the audience's sensitivity, with an actual ask to be heard and understood through active dialogue.

The campaign will therefore pivot on the hashtag #IfYouOnlyKnew paired with #AtopicEczemaDay. The aim is showing the invisible struggles happening in a patients’ life, with an emphasis on the emotional burden on children and teens living with the condition.

#IfYouOnlyKnew Campaign Graphics (Square)

There is a rising concern in the community about the emotional consequences of the illness affecting the mental health of the patients, especially the ones who are in their developmental age. It’s not so easy to make it understandable how it feels to deal continuously with the burdens of AE, and it’s probably harder to imagine what could be the perceptions, the fears and the untold needs of the young.
