GlobalSkin African Regional Meeting

As our membership grows in the six regions of the world, so too do the opportunities for Members to work together regionally.  Building on the regional conversations and meetings in 2022 and 2023, we are pleased to share that we have taken the next step in facilitating regional collaboration.

GlobalSkin will host its first regional Member meeting in Africa, April 18-20, 2024. Our 36 Members from 12 countries in that region have been invited to an in-person meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of this event is to identify ways for GlobalSkin Members to collaboratively improve the lives of the patients they serve nationally and regionally.

#MySkinIsRare Campaign Recap

In anticipation of Rare Disease Day, GlobalSkin ran the #MySkinIsRare campaign from February 1 to 29, aiming to increase awareness about Rare Diseases of the skin and encourage patients to share their personal experiences. Campaign resources, including social media cards and online banners, were accessible on GlobalSkin.org/MySkinIsRare to support patient organizations in promoting the campaign within their networks

The campaign garnered significant attention, with over 2.7 million impressions, 242,000 video views, and 71,771 engagement instances. Thank you to everyone for taking part in this year's #MySkinIsRare campaign and making it a great success!

Rare Disease Day Fund

GlobalSkin is proud to have supported 15 Members representing 12 countries with its new Rare Disease Day Fund. With this support, Members created amazing projects including hosting workshops, radio presentations, developing pamphlets and running social media campaigns. These initiatives not only raised awareness but also fostered a sense of community and solidarity among those affected by rare diseases.

A detailed summary of Members’ projects benefiting from the Rare Disease Day Fund will be available soon, highlighting the impactful ways in which they contributed to promoting understanding and support for rare diseases globally.

World Congress on Rare Skin Diseases (WCRSD)

GlobalSkin, in collaboration with several RareDERM Members, who are also part of the ERN-Skin ePAG, have begun planning for the second World Congress on Rare Skin Diseases (WCRSD) which will take place June 12-14, 2024, in Paris, France. Registration for the congress is open. Join us on Day 2 of the main congress program for the Patient Symposium focused on the strengths, needs and challenges of the global rare dermatology patient voice in driving innovation and collaborations.

GlobalSkin is proud to be offering a new travel bursary for this congress which will support the attendance of 13 Members, representing 8 countries. It is expected that a total of approximately 25 GlobalSkin Members will be attending the WCRSD.

RareDERM Community of Practice

Discussions during last year’s RareDERM Forum in Brussels highlighted the concept of creating a Community of Practice to tackle specific challenges within the community. During an engaging first meeting, our Members have decided to focus on: 1) better understanding and leveraging registries, and 2) how to best highlight the burden of disease. The next meeting is set to take place Tuesday, April 9, 9:30-11:00 am ET. Members who are interested in learning more about this initiative can contact Stephanie Miller.

World Atopic Eczema Day

GlobalSkin has begun planning for this year's World Atopic Eczema Day campaign on September 14 in collaboration with our partners at EFA.

We will again be offering grants to support our Members' awareness day efforts. Applications to the World Atopic Eczema Day Fund will be accepted in early May.

Atopic Eczema Treatment Care Guidelines

During an Atopic Eczema Community workshop in 2022, it became clear that this community feels strongly about the need for better treatment and care for everyone living with atopic eczema, regardless of where they live.

Based on the Community’s recommendation, GlobalSkin decided to investigate the possibility of establishing a global standard of treatment care guidelines. This initiative seeks to understand: 1) if it is possible to create a global standard of care, and 2) if current treatment guidelines could be adapted in other regions.

Outcomes from this initiative include a Treatment Guidelines Audit and Key Insights from a Multi-stakeholder Round Table event. For 2024, we are working with the Community to determine which of the recommendations to pursue. Learn more about this project from concept to next steps.

Atopic Eczema Community of Practice

New this year, GlobalSkin is forming a community of practice within the Atopic Eczema community focused on building productive and collaborative working relationships with HCPs. GlobalSkin is excited to be supporting this community through their sharing of knowledge and expertise.

European Policy Roundtable Event Recap

On February 2, GlobalSkin and the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) co-hosted an online Roundtable titled, "Addressing Under-Prioritized Skin Diseases: Policy Responses to High-Burden Conditions”. This initiative stemmed from the European Union's 2023 Discussion Paper: "Scoping Study on Evidence to Address High-Burden Under-Researched Medical Conditions."

The roundtable featured a special address by European Commissioner for Health and Food Security, Stella Kyriakides, who emphasized the important role of GlobalSkin in advocacy and awareness for dermatology patients and discussed new research funding opportunities to address under-prioritized skin diseases. The event served as a platform for bringing together a diverse range of experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from the dermatology and public health sectors. Speakers presented policy recommendations to tackle the issues discussed. If you missed the event, you can now view the recording or read the roundtable report here..

We continue to work in close coordination with the ILDS the International Foundation on Dermatology, Network for Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases Network (NNN), and Anesvad, to pursue an all-skin diseases resolution for consideration at the next World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2025.

GlobalSkin Advocacy Initiatives Webinar

GlobalSkin recently held a webinar for Members to outline our advocacy priorities for 2024, which include advocating for a WHA resolution and backing the global awareness campaign led by the World Skin Health Coalition. The webinar focused on how GlobalSkin Members can actively support these endeavors. Members can watch the webinar in the "members only" section of the GlobalSkin website.

We extend our gratitude to our guest speaker Dr. José-Antonio Ruiz-Postigo, Medical Officer at the World Health Organization. We look forward to further engaging with our GlobalSkin Members on this important resolution advocacy work. Our global alliance will be key in reaching many countries and health ministers to gather more support.

Uniting to Change Perceptions
World Skin Health Coalition Campaign

The World Skin Health Coalition launched a global campaign on March 11, 2024, aimed at raising awareness worldwide about the daily challenges encountered by millions of individuals due to their skin diseases and conditions. GlobalSkin, as a founding partner in the World Skin Health Coalition, is calling on the broader dermatology network to engage in and advocate through this global awareness campaign.
