Championing Skin Patient Voices
GlobalSkin Drives Next Steps After Landmark WHA Resolution on Skin Diseases

Following the 78th World Health Assembly in May, where Member States adopted the landmark resolution “Skin Diseases as a Global Public Health Priority,” a new era has begun for the more than 2 billion people affected by skin conditions worldwide. Long under-recognized and under-resourced, skin diseases are now elevated to the level of other major health priorities, creating an unprecedented mandate for governments, health systems, and patient organizations to secure equitable access to prevention, early detection, treatment, and long-term care.

The resolution has set the stage for a Global Action Plan on Skin Diseases, with GlobalSkin working closely with the World Health Organization to help shape this plan and ensure that patient organizations from our worldwide network can contribute their insights so that affordable, high-quality dermatological care is firmly embedded in global health strategies. GlobalSkin is also carrying this momentum onto the world stage at the 80th United Nations General Assembly and the 4th High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in New York, September 22-26. By working with government representatives, health agencies, and civil society partners, we are helping to embed dermatology within the broader NCD agenda and reinforcing the priorities outlined in the WHA resolution. We will soon share details on upcoming consultation opportunities so that everyone can actively play their part in the next phase of this effort.

GlobalSkin CEO Sheds Light on the WHA Resolution Adoption in Healthy.MT Interview

Recently, Healthy.mt spotlighted GlobalSkin CEO Jennifer Austin in an interview on the landmark World Health Assembly resolution recognizing skin diseases a global public health priority. In the interview, Jennifer explains how this decision paves the way for a WHO Global Action Plan focused on equitable, person-centered care and the reduction of stigma. Her insights elevated the patient voice on a global stage, further strengthening GlobalSkin’s visibility, policy influence, and reach with the global media.

Yet Another Global Breakthrough: WHO Adds Sunscreen, Emollients to Essential Medicines List

The World Health Organization’s landmark decision to include broad-spectrum sunscreen on its 2025 Essential Medicines Lists (EML & EMLc) marks a historic turning point for skin health worldwide. This achievement is the result of a global campaign led by the Global Albinism Alliance (GAA), the UN Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of Rights by Persons with Albinism and the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change, to ensure that people with albinism—who face a 1,000-fold higher risk of UV-induced skin cancer— can access sunscreen as a life-saving necessity rather than a luxury. GlobalSkin proudly supported these efforts by providing key endorsements that amplified the patient voice and reinforcing the urgent need for equitable access to dermatological care.

In parallel, urea- and glycerin-based emollients were also added by the WHO to its EML for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in adults and children, which represents a major advance for these patients by ensuring affordable first-line treatment and prevention. GlobalSkin—alongside the International Society for Atopic Dermatitis and WHO Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases—actively supported this application as well, by advocating to help secure this important recognition.

Reflecting on these twin milestones, GlobalSkin CEO Jennifer Austin highlighted their global significance in an interview with The Hindu, calling them “historic steps forward” for patients and a crucial starting point for broader reforms in skin health coverage. She emphasized that while these inclusions are a symbolic victory, the challenge lies in implementation—making sure these essential medicines are available, affordable, and integrated into healthcare systems everywhere. Together with the WHO’s earlier resolution on skin diseases, these achievements strengthen the foundation for a global action plan to reduce inequities in dermatological care and improve the lives of millions worldwide.

Elevating the Dermatology Patient Community
GlobalSkin Patient Expert Scholarship

The GlobalSkin Patient Expert Scholarship Program—which empowers patient leaders through education and support—has officially announced its 2026 cohort. 15 patient leaders representing 13 countries and 12 disease areas will receive financial support to join the EUPATI Patient Expert Training Programme, where they will deepen their understanding of medicine research and clinical trial development. Over the course of the next year, they will take part in regular meetings and online groups to share resources, discuss challenges, and support each other’s progress.

Through this comprehensive program of training, mentorship, and skills development, the scholars will strengthen their advocacy and apply their new expertise to advance patient priorities in their home countries and communities.

Meanwhile, the current cohort of 15 continues to progress toward graduation in October 2025, staying connected and motivated through dedicated WhatsApp groups where they exchange study strategies, ask questions, and encourage one another. We wish the 2025 cohort the very best and look forward to seeing them implement their learnings in their respective communities and beyond.

GlobalSkin Member Impact Fund: An Inspiring Story

GlobalSkin’s Member Impact Fund is an annual grant programme that is designed to support Member organizations in the important and impactful work that they undertake to help their dermatology patient communities. Beautifully Unblemished Vitiligo Support Group, Inc. (BUVSG) was one of 47 organizations approved to receive a grant through the 2025 GlobalSkin Member Impact Fund. As part of their project, BUVSG created the Radiant Confidence Workbook, a resource designed to help teenagers living with vitiligo and other skin conditions build self-esteem, embrace their uniqueness, and develop a positive mindset. The project set out to empower young people by fostering self-love, resilience, and confidence, aiming to reduce the social and emotional challenges that often accompany visible skin conditions.

Earlier this year, BUVSG developed and printed 35 professionally illustrated workbooks and introduced them at the WVD-USA Teen Summit, where teens actively engaged with the content, shared reflections, and participated in guided discussions. This launch not only validated the need for resources tailored to youth but also strengthened community bonds and personal confidence, offering a replicable model for ongoing support and emotional well-being among dermatology patient communities.

The next round of applications in the Member Impact Fund opens November 2025. Stay tuned for more details.

Community & Networks Updates
GlobalSkin Unveils Young Patient Leaders Council

GlobalSkin has launched the Young Patient Leader (YPL) Council and its Working Group to empower dermatology patient advocacy among youth globally. Comprised of young patient leaders aged 18-35, the Council spans 23 countries across all WHO regions and represents various skin diseases, with a core Working Group of seven advocates plus co-chairs guiding its strategy and representing diverse voices. The Council’s vision is to amplify youth advocacy, foster cross-regional collaboration, and build inclusivity, innovation, and leadership among emerging patient leaders.

In the months ahead, the YPL Council will roll out a workplan shaped by priorities identified through community engagement, host regular “Coffee Chats” and quarterly meetings, offer skill-building and networking opportunities, and launch a resource hub to support its members. With these steps, the Council aims to enhance the visibility and voice of young patient leaders, strengthen capacity in member organizations, and deliver lasting impact for dermatology communities by nurturing the next generation of advocates. The Working Group met in early September to plan the first Council meeting (taking place October 2), outlining icebreakers, skill-building sessions, and projects to kick off collaboration, networking, and mentorship.

A Look Back at the GlobalSkin Skin Matters Reception

On September 17, GlobalSkin hosted the Skin Matters Reception in Paris, which served as a key networking highlight within the broader European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2025. The event brought together over 70 participants, including leading dermatologists, patient organization representatives, researchers and industry partners. Conversations focused on the impact of the recently adopted World Health Assembly Resolution on Skin Diseases, next steps for elevating dermatology within global health policy, and opportunities to expand collaborative advocacy across Europe.

GlobalSkin played a central role as convener and facilitator, steering conversations that underscored the importance of a united dermatology patient voice in shaping national and EU health policies. The program featured six engaging sessions, from making the case for change in dermatology advocacy to showcasing real-world patient success stories, as well as hands-on breakouts on designing targeted campaigns and opening doors to policymakers. GlobalSkin presented its own advocacy tools, including the GRIDD research and the recent WHA Resolution on Skin Diseases, as a springboard for collaborative action. The forum concluded with alignment on concrete next steps for European advocacy, setting the stage for future GlobalSkin-Europe initiatives and reinforcing momentum for stronger dermatology representation across upcoming EU health and policy agendas.

Uniting to Change Perceptions
Research and PRIDD Updates

GlobalSkin’s research took center stage at the 2025 EADV Congress, where we presented new data underscoring the critical connection between skin conditions and mental health. Our abstract and accompanying e-poster "Mental Health and Well-Being Support for Individuals Living with Skin Conditions: A Global Landscape Analysis of Patient Needs and Current Resources," detailed a first-of-its-kind international review of 26 patient advocacy websites and related initiatives offering mental health and well-being resources for people living with dermatological diseases. Our second poster "Patient-Reported Impact of Dermatological Diseases and Mental Health" emphasized the importance of capturing the multidimensional burden of skin conditions on patients’ lives, as it is a significant risk factor for psychiatric comorbidity. Take a look at two posters presented at the EADV Congress this year.

Complementing these EADV presentations, the GRIDD Research Team is preparing to submit a key responsiveness manuscript for publication. This paper will provide critical validation of the Patient-Reported Impact of Dermatological Diseases (PRIDD) measure’s ability to detect changes in disease impact over time—strengthening its utility as the world’s first fully validated dermatology impact measure. Together, these efforts reinforce GlobalSkin’s commitment to advancing patient-centered research and ensuring that mental health and dermatology care are addressed hand-in-hand on the global stage.

Pierre Fabre's News Release on the Use of the PRIDD Measure

Pierre Fabre—the first to use the PRIDD measure in a clinical trial—recently issued a news release discussing the tool’s value in quantifying how skin diseases impact quality of life. The online piece emphasizes that PRIDD is the only dermatology patient-reported outcome measure that meets all seven Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) criteria for validity and reliability.
