The Scarring Alopecia Foundation (SAF), formerly known as CARF, was formed as a result of one person’s experience with scarring alopecia, or cicatricial alopecia. SAF’s work is in line with its mission of providing education and patient support, raising public awareness and advancing and promoting research.
Impact Fund Project
CARF hosted five live, interactive webinars in Q3 and Q4 of 2021 to educate our patient community on topics of issue and concern for patients. August featured three consecutive webinars on each of the major types of scarring alopecia. These webinars were led by physician moderators who provided answers to live questions.
In October, CARF featured live demos on camouflaging and beauty techniques by professional service providers. In December, the live webinar featured presentations on the latest in research and treatment options for scarring alopecia.
The Member Impact Fund is important to CARF because our organization does not receive any pharma or government funding. We rely solely on funding from private sources and affected patient donors and friends. Having organizations like GlobalSkin who support these dermatologic patient groups who work tirelessly on behalf of their patients is most appreciated.
The Biggest Success of the Project in Our Patient Community
The biggest success of this project is bringing educational programming with a few clicks on a computer into the homes of patients. Scarring alopecia is a very private and personal hair loss condition, and many patients suffer in silence, both physically and emotionally. These educational webinars help close the gap between knowledge and fear of the unknown.
