CMTC-OVM

CMTC-OVM is a worldwide non-profit patient organization that aims to support and improve the quality of life of people suffering from vascular abnormalities (blood vessel abnormalities), such as CMTC (‘Van Lohuizen syndrome’).

The association was formally founded on January 22, 1997 with the main goals, which still remain today:

  1. To promote the welfare of people who suffer from vascular malformations such CMTC (Van Lohuizen syndrome), particularly its own members.

  2. To promote (scientific) research into vascular malformations such as CMTC, the causes and the treatment thereof, and all that is in the broadest sense pertinent to such activities.

Their GlobalSkin Impact Fund Project was focused on creating a new section on their website, that caters to the unique needs and perspectives of young adults.

The organization recognized that their website was not youth-friendly, and contained much information that was presented in an overwhelming way. The purpose of creating a new youth-friendly webpage was to reach a bigger audience and have easily attainable answers to questions that young people may have regarding their skin disease.

A lot happens between the ages of 15 and 30,” says Heleen. “That goes for every teenager and adolescent. But if you have a chronic condition or disability, it is even more complicated."

Their project had two main activities. The first was the design and set up of the website in a multi-site environment. This process was collaboratively co-created alongside young patients from 4 countries. Their feedback was integrated into the design.

The next step was to determine the structure and content of the site to suit the needs of this new audience. The GlobalSkin Member Impact Fund supported the beginning stages of CMTC-OVM's project, and the remainder of the project was funded by the Dutch Government.
